Tools for applying Zimmerit in 1:35 scale are a photo-etched set of spatulas and patterned blades with which the period texture of the coating is pressed into the putty.
Responsibility details are not available.
Tools made of etched sheet, not parts for a model: that is the essence of this aid from the Italian brand Royal Model. The set contains a spatula and blades with a cut-out pattern, with which the texture of Zimmerit is pressed into freshly applied putty. The spacing of the teeth is derived from 1:35 scale, so the result matches the size of the vehicle being built.
Zimmerit was a putty-like compound with which German manufacturers coated the armor of fighting vehicles from 1943. It was meant to prevent magnetic anti-tank charges from sticking. The compound was applied by hand and grooves were formed in it with combs, which is why the pattern differs not only between plants but also between individual vehicles. Its use ended in the autumn of 1944.
You apply a thin layer of modeling putty or a two-part compound to the armor and spread it evenly. While the compound is still soft, you draw the blade in short strokes side by side. Wipe the blade as you go so that it does not clog, and work in smaller areas: the putty sets faster than one expects. Unevenness and breaks in the pattern look credible, on the other hand; the real coating was not perfect.
Putty and paints are not included in the package. Ventilate while working with the compounds and follow the instructions on their packaging.
