The American guided missile cruiser USS Cowpens as she was in 1998 in 1:350 scale from Flyhawk. A plastic ship kit.
Responsibility details are not available.
The kit captures the ship as she looked in 1998. Stating the year matters just as much with modern warships as with historic ones: the electronics, the armament and the paint change over the course of a career, and the same ship looked different in the 1990s than after later refits. The 1:350 scale is a rewarding one for a cruiser of this size, because the finished model comes out big enough for the individual elements of the superstructure to be legible, while it still fits into an ordinary display case.
USS Cowpens is one of the American guided missile cruisers fitted with the system that combines a radar with flat antennas on the superstructure, fire control and vertical launch cells hidden in the deck. It is precisely those flat antennas on the sides of the superstructure that are the unmistakable recognition feature of this class of ship. The cruiser's role is to protect a carrier group against air attack and at the same time to carry missiles against land targets.
Paint the hull and the deck separately before you fit the superstructure. Lay the dividing line of the hull with masking tape and make sure it is at the same height on both sides. Mask the flat antennas of the superstructure and spray them separately, because on a gray ship they are the only markedly different areas. Fit the railings, the masts and the antenna wiring at the very end. Keep the weathering restrained, because modern ships are well maintained and overdone rust looks unconvincing.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
