About product

Bf 109 F - late air intake 1:48, Quickboost

A resin replacement for the air intake on a model of the Bf 109 F series fighter in 1:48 scale. According to the name this is the late version. It is not a kit, but a single part that is swapped on a plastic model. The Quickboost range is built on this way of working: the casting has crisp edges, a thin wall and the opening of the intake cast hollow, so drilling and filling are done away with. The set is intended for Hasegawa kits.

Why the intake of all things matters

The air intake for supercharging the engine is on the left side of the engine cowling and is among the most conspicuous distinguishing features of the individual versions of the Bf 109. Between the early and the late form the shape of the throat differed, as did its standoff from the cowling and the size of the inlet opening. For a modeler that means the intake is not a cosmetic detail but an element by which it can be told whether a model matches the chosen subversion. Plastic parts also tend to be thick-walled in this place and the opening is only suggested.

Fitting and painting tips

First wash the resin castings in lukewarm soapy water so that the mold release agent from the mold disappears, as paint does not hold under it. Cut the original plastic intake off with a saw and level the area on the cowling, ideally with a file with a guide edge, so that the surface stays flat. Try the new part dry and watch its angle in relation to the longitudinal axis of the fuselage - a tilted intake is more visible on a finished model than any seam. Glue with gel super glue, drop by drop. Paint the inside of the throat dark before gluing it on, and a fine sheen of wear suits the edge of the inlet, because that is exactly where the paint was rubbed away on the real machine.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of the Bf 109 F series in 1:48 scale.
  • Modelers who care about telling the subversions apart correctly.
  • Those who do not want to drill and fill a plastic intake.
  • Those interested in a quick improvement with a single part.

The accessory is supplied unpainted, as resin castings. Glue, paints and the base kit are not part of the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

No. This is a single resin part with which you replace the plastic air intake on a model that is already built.

They differ in the shape of the throat, in its standoff from the cowling and in the size of the inlet. Choose according to the subversion you are building.

On a resin casting the opening tends to be cast hollow. The exact state depends on the particular piece, though, so inspect the part before gluing.

With super glue, preferably a gel. Cement for plastic does not work on resin.
