The crew for 1:48 scale kits comes from the same subject as the larger version, but the manufacturer adds photo-etched metal parts to it as well. The basis is cast in polyurethane resin, and the three-dimensional groundwork for the sculpted master was prepared by Roberto Reale. The box arrives unpainted and without a base.
Photo-etched metal is used on figures wherever a casting would have to be absurdly thick, that is for straps, buckles, suspenders or small fittings. The parts are broken out of the fret with a sharp knife against a hard surface, bent with tweezers and attached with a drop of cyanoacrylate glue. The metal has to be degreased and primed before painting, otherwise the paint will peel off during handling.
In 1:48 scale legible contrast pays off more than fine shading. Build the winter outfit on a light gray undercoat and leave white only on the highest points; a dark wash will then draw out the folds by itself. You can manage the face with three tones and only suggest the eyes with a dark spot, because drawn pupils look unnatural at this size. Finally, bring the finished figures together with a weak filter so that they belong to one another in color and do not look like parts from three different sets.
