About product

Junkers F.13 with skis, early production (1:48, Miniart)

This injection-molded plastic kit in 1:48 scale from the manufacturer Miniart captures the pioneering all-metal airliner Junkers F.13 in the early production form, equipped with winter ski landing gear for landing on snow. The kit is worked out in detail: it contains a full interior, finely reproduced corrugated duralumin skin, photo-etched and clear parts and opening covers. Decals for three color variants tend to be in the package. It is a modern, more demanding kit that rewards patient modelers.

The real subject

The Junkers F.13, introduced in 1919, was the world's first all-metal airliner and the first machine designed exclusively for commercial carriage of passengers. It marked the transition from wood-and-fabric biplanes to all-metal cantilever low-wing monoplanes. The characteristic corrugated duralumin skin became the hallmark of Junkers aircraft for decades. Thanks to the ski landing gear the F.13 served in snowbound and remote regions as well, for example in Scandinavia and in the Soviet Union.

Building and painting tips

Finish and paint the interior before closing the fuselage — once it is put together there will be no access to it. Bond the photo-etched parts with super glue. Paint the corrugated skin so that the structure comes out — a thin wash into the recesses and fine dry brushing of the ridges will help. Apply a primer and paint with an airbrush; bring the metal surfaces to life with shades of aluminum. Fit the ski landing gear last and add a suggestion of snow or weathered paint.

Who the model is for

  • For advanced modelers who will appreciate a rich interior and photo-etch.
  • For collectors of aviation history and of pioneering airliners.
  • For fans of winter and polar schemes.
  • For builders in 1:48 scale.

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

Winter ski landing gear for landing on snow and the early production form of the aircraft. The kit has a full interior, photo-etched and clear parts and decals for three variants.

Rather for more advanced modelers. The rich interior and the photo-etched parts call for patience and experience, but the result is very striking.
