The model has finely engraved panel lines, a detailed pilot's and gunner's cockpit and glazing for an open as well as a closed canopy. The decals offer marking options for US Navy units. The SBD Dauntless was the main carrier-borne dive bomber of the US Navy in the first years of the Second World War. Although it was not the fastest, it was rugged and reliable and sank more Japanese shipping tonnage than any other Allied aircraft. It played a key role at the Battle of Midway, where SBDs destroyed the Japanese aircraft carriers. The SBD-3 version introduced, among other things, better armor and self-sealing tanks.
The characteristic perforated dive brakes on the wings call for careful cleaning up. Paint the cockpit and pick out its detail before closing up the fuselage, and glue the glazing with cement for canopies. After the gloss clear coat and the decals, pick out the panel lines with a wash; carrier aircraft typically wore a weathered blue-gray camouflage with a light underside.
