An unusual subject that is missing from display cases more often than it should be. The scene is a reminder that between combat episodes the greatest part of military life was taken up with looking after oneself. The casting comes from the workshop of the Italian brand Royal Model and is executed in resin, whose fine-grained surface holds even such subtle details as taut skin or wet cloth.
Behind the front, washing was improvised out of anything that held water: out of drums, canvas or cans hung from a branch. The water was warmed by the sun or not at all, and the chance came up when the unit was resting rather than to a timetable. It is exactly this everydayness that makes the scene a rewarding addition to a scene that would otherwise show nothing but hardware.
A figure roughly thirty-eight millimeters tall will not take coarse coats of paint. It pays to thin more than is usual with larger figures and to build the shades up gradually; a single heavy coat will flood the modeling of the muscles. Bare skin is painted with a warm base and shaded toward reddish tones, not toward gray.
Before painting, wash the casting in lukewarm soapy water, remove the casting remains and join the parts with cyanoacrylate. Cement for polystyrene has no effect on resin, because it does not bite into it chemically.
