An injection-molded plastic kit of the two-seat Russian multirole fighter Sukhoi Su-30SM in 1:48 scale from Great Wall Hobby. This is a modern, newly developed tooling: Great Wall Hobby is a Chinese manufacturer with a reputation among modelers for first-class molds, exact fit and fine engraving.
What the 1:48 scale means for the build. At this scale a Flanker-family machine makes a large model with correspondingly large and finer detail, and it calls for room both on the workbench and in a display case. The bigger surfaces also show more: panel lines, the texture of the finish and the interior of both cockpits are all visible, so the work on them pays off.
And do not confuse the SM with the MKK. The Su-30SM has both canards and thrust vectoring, whereas the export Su-30MKK for China has neither. It is a fundamental visual as well as technical difference.
The Su-30SM is a two-seat (tandem cockpits) twin-engined heavy multirole fighter of the Su-27 family, intended for the Russian Air Force. It follows the line of the export Su-30MKI and takes two key features from it: canards and engines with thrust vectoring, whose movable nozzles, together with the canards, give the aircraft its famous supermaneuverability. It first flew in 2012. It carries a phased array radar and performs air superiority tasks as well as attacks against ground and surface targets; thanks to its two cockpits it also serves for training.
A classic glued kit - use thin liquid cement for plastic. Allow for the fact that a two-seat cockpit means twice the work in the interior: it is worth finishing both seats and both instrument panels before you close the canopy. Sand the joints of the fuselage and the leading edges and restore the engraving. Apply primer before painting, and spray modern Russian gray-blue camouflage with an airbrush in thin coats. Lay the decals onto gloss varnish, fix them with a softener and even the surface out with matte varnish. Glue the canards on at the very end, so that they do not get in the way while handling, and watch that their angle is symmetrical.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
