An injection-molded plastic kit of the British heavy cruiser HMS Kent in 1:700 scale from the manufacturer Trumpeter. 1:700 is the most widespread scale for ship models precisely because it holds a sensible ratio between the size of the model and the amount of detail — a finished cruiser will fit into an ordinary display case and at the same time keeps the overall proportion of the real subject. Check the exact contents of the package, the form of the hull and the extent of the markings on the packaging of the kit.
HMS Kent belonged to the County class heavy cruisers, which the Royal Navy built in the interwar period under the limits of the naval treaties of the time — hence the standard displacement of around ten thousand tons and a main armament of eight inch caliber in four twin turrets. The typical features of the class are a long, fairly high hull, three funnels and extensive superstructures, which gave the ships an unmistakable silhouette. Kent served during the Second World War in several operational areas, among them the Mediterranean and with convoys in the north; over the course of the war it went through modifications to the armament, the radars and the superstructure, so its appearance differs markedly according to the period. Check, therefore, which period the schemes in the box relate to.
Always offer the hull and the decks up dry first and check whether they sit without strain. Glue with a thin cement for plastic applied with a brush into the joint — on tiny detail in 1:700 every surplus drop tells. Painting is easier in parts: spray the decks and the sides separately over primer and join them with masking, not after the whole has been assembled. Keep the patina restrained, as strong washes and pigments quickly look overdone in this scale; a fine lightening of the horizontal surfaces gives a better effect. Railings, radar antennas and ship's fittings in photo-etched metal are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise, but it is exactly those that raise the impression of the model most. A finished model stands out well on a simple stand or in an imitation of the water surface made from acrylic gel.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
