An injection-molded plastic kit of the Avia CS-199 in 1:72 scale from the Czech brand Smer. It is the two-seat trainer version of the postwar Czechoslovak Avia S-199 fighter. Smer is a long-established domestic maker issuing the set as a reissue from an older mold, so the plastic has the character of a classic kit: a reasonable number of parts, a straightforward build and room for modeling skill in fine-tuning detail. The box holds plastic sprues, decals and instructions; go by the information on the box for the exact contents.
The Avia S-199 came about in postwar Czechoslovakia from partly built Messerschmitt Bf 109 G airframes. The original Daimler-Benz engines were not available, so the inverted V12 Junkers Jumo 211 bomber engine with a massive propeller was installed in the airframe. The result was a machine with great torque, unpleasant behavior on takeoff and landing and a reputation that earned it the nickname Mezek, meaning mule. The type served with the Czechoslovak Air Force and in 1948 also became the first fighter of the newly founded Israel. The two-seat CS-199 version came about by conversion into a trainer with two cockpits in tandem and served to convert pilots onto this not very forgiving type.
Older molds deserve preparation: first clear the parts of flash and burrs, check the fit of the fuselage halves dry and even the seams out with putty and sanding. Glue with a thin cement for plastic (extra thin), which wicks into the seam and does not smear the surface. On the two-seat Mezek, give attention to both cockpits, as even a modest interior shows under the glazing. Mask the glazing and glue it so that the cement does not fog the clear parts. Apply a primer before painting and spray with an airbrush in thin coats. Before decals, clear coat the area in gloss, and once the decals have dried use a softener and seal the surface with a flat or semi-flat clear coat. Pick the panel lines out with a fine wash.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
