A set of 3D-printed FOD covers in 1:72 scale from the brand 3DF, designed for the Aero L-29 Delfin model from AMK. Straight to the point: this is NOT an aircraft kit. It is an accessory you add to the base plastic kit - you will find no model, glue or paints in the package. The abbreviation FOD comes from Foreign Object Damage, that is, damage to an engine from an ingested foreign object.
A jet engine draws air in with enormous force - and with it easily a pebble, a screw or a forgotten piece of tooling, which can destroy the compressor in a second. On a parked aircraft, covers are therefore fitted into the air intakes (and often into the nozzle as well); they tend to be strikingly colored and to carry the warning REMOVE BEFORE FLIGHT. For the modeler that brings a double benefit. First, they are bold colored features that reveal at first glance that the machine is on the ground - ideal for a diorama or an airfield scene. Second, they are a practical saving of work: the cover closes the intake, so you do not have to struggle with detailing the intake duct, which would not be visible anyway.
The Aero L-29 Delfin is the first jet aircraft of Czechoslovak design - series production ran from 1963 and over some eleven years gave rise to thousands of machines. The Delfin became the standard jet trainer of the Warsaw Pact armies. For a Czech modeler it is a home-grown legend that was flown across the whole Eastern Bloc.
3D-printed parts are not glued with cement for polystyrene - that does not take on this material at all. Use super glue (cyanoacrylate), and epoxy on larger areas. Before painting, wash the parts in lukewarm soapy water, so that print resin residue disappears and the paint takes hold. Do any sanding wet and do not inhale the dust - it is harmful to health. The covers are usually sprayed in a saturated warning shade, away from the fuselage.
The accessory is supplied unassembled and unpainted. The base model, glue and paints are not included in the package. The set is shape-matched to the AMK kit - it need not fit a model from another manufacturer.
