About product

Eduard GBU-12 Paveway II 1:72 - 3D-Printed External Stores

An add-on set of 3D-printed armament from the Czech maker Eduard. This is not an airplane model but an underwing weapon in 1:72 scale with which you can complete a model of a modern combat aircraft on the bench. The parts are printed in resin, so they have finer surface detail and sharper edges than ordinary injected plastic. Working with them is the same as working with resin and suits more experienced modelers.

The real subject

The GBU-12 Paveway II is an American laser-guided bomb built on the body of a classic unguided bomb of the 500 pound class, with a guidance head and folding wings added. It uses semi-active laser guidance: the bomb homes on the reflection of a laser beam with which a designator on board the aircraft or an observer on the ground illuminates the target. Thanks to its low weight, its accuracy and its low cost it has become one of the most widespread precision-guided weapons of the western air forces, and it is carried by a whole range of types, from tactical fighters and attack aircraft to unmanned vehicles. Unlike heavy satellite-guided bombs, this is the typical light weapon for precise strikes on point targets.

Use and work tips

  • Separate the parts carefully from the supports, best with a fine saw or a knife, not by twisting.
  • Before bonding and painting, wash the 3D-printed parts (lukewarm water with a little dish soap) and let them dry thoroughly.
  • Bond with super glue (cyanoacrylate); ordinary cement for plastic does not hold on resin.
  • Sand and cut with respiratory protection and ideally wet, because resin dust must not be inhaled.
  • Apply a primer before painting; it evens out the surface and the paint holds better on a printed part.
  • Check the pylons and hardpoints on the base model, because the set is mounted on pylons that have to match the particular aircraft.

Who the set is for

For modelers of modern military aircraft in 1:72 scale who want to replace the coarser plastic armament from the box with more detailed stores, or to put together a weapons configuration that is faithful to a period and an operation. Given the resin and the small parts, the set suits advanced modelers.

An add-on set, not a complete model - the base aircraft kit is not included in the package. Supplied unassembled and unpainted; glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise. Use respiratory protection when sanding.

FAQ

No. It is an add-on set of external stores - 3D-printed GBU-12 bombs in 1:72 scale. The base aircraft kit has to be bought separately.

The GBU-12 is a lighter bomb of the 500 pound class with semi-active laser guidance, so the target has to be illuminated by a laser. The GBU-31 JDAM series, by contrast, are heavy 2000 pound weapons guided by satellite (GPS/INS) that need no illumination of the target.

Much like resin: wash the parts, cut them off the supports, bond with super glue (cyanoacrylate) and apply a primer before painting. Protect your airways when sanding, because resin dust must not be inhaled.
