1:72 M983 Tractor with AN/TPY-2 X Band Radar is a plastic kit of an American heavy tractor with a transportable radar from Trumpeter.
Responsibility details are not available.
This injection-molded plastic kit combines the American M983 heavy tractor of the HEMTT family with the transportable AN/TPY-2 radar working in the X band. The model is interesting twice over: once as a transport vehicle, and again as a striking antenna unit that has no equal in a display case. The kit is made by Trumpeter.
The AN/TPY-2 is a transportable radar with an electronically scanned array used to search for and track ballistic missiles. It is a key part of the THAAD missile defense system, and in forward-based mode it can pick up targets soon after launch. The short wavelength of the X band gives it high resolution, which makes it possible to tell a warhead from the debris of the booster. The antenna unit sits on a semi-trailer towed by the M983 tractor, so the whole system can be moved by road and by air, and that is the main reason the radar can be deployed at short notice.
Build the tractor and the antenna semi-trailer as two separate groups and join them only after painting, otherwise the surfaces are hard to reach. Use liquid cement for polystyrene on the plastic and mask the cab glazing. The large front face of the antenna calls for a smooth base and an even coat of paint, so work here with an airbrush in thin layers. Keep the weathering restrained, with dust concentrated on the chassis and the lower edges; too much mud would look unconvincing on a rig of this kind.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
