About product

McDonnell Douglas Phantom FG.1/FGR.2 RAF in 1:72 scale from Airfix

A plastic kit of the British Phantom in 1:72 scale from Airfix. According to the name it covers both British versions, that is the FG.1 and the FGR.2 in Royal Air Force service. The British Phantom is among the most characteristic machines of the Cold War over Europe, and in this size it fits into a display case together with other aircraft.

The real subject

British Phantoms are a chapter of their own among all the F-4s. Instead of the American General Electric J79 turbojets they were given Rolls-Royce Spey turbofan engines. The bulkier engines called for a wider rear fuselage, markedly larger air intakes and differently arranged nozzles, so the British machine can be told apart at first glance even from a distance. The FG.1 version was originally built for the Royal Navy and operated from an aircraft carrier deck, later passing to the Royal Air Force. The FGR.2 version was land-based from the start and flew strike and reconnaissance missions before being reassigned to the air defense of the islands. British Phantoms stayed in service until the early nineties.

Building and painting tips

The key to the result is clean canopy glazing - apply the masks before spraying and let the frames stand out with a sharp edge. British Phantoms wore very different finishes during their service, from dark gray-green camouflage combinations to the later overall gray air defense schemes, so pick the scheme in advance and choose the shades accordingly. The metal areas around the nozzles come alive with a dark wash and fine pigments. Spray a gloss coat under the decals; a final matte coat will then even the whole surface out.

Who the model is for

  • For fans of the Royal Air Force and of naval aviation in the Cold War era.
  • For collectors of the F-4 family whose display case is missing the Spey version.
  • For intermediate modelers - 1:72 scale is forgiving, but the cockpit glazing and landing gear take patience.
  • For those looking for an aircraft with an unmistakable silhouette and a rich service history.

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

The FG.1 was originally built for the Royal Navy and flew from an aircraft carrier deck, later passing to the RAF. The FGR.2 was land-based from the start and flew strike, reconnaissance and finally interception missions.

Mainly in the engines. The British machines were given Rolls-Royce Spey turbofans, which give them a wider rear fuselage, larger air intakes and differently arranged nozzles.

Rather for a modeler with some experience. 1:72 scale is forgiving, but the cockpit glazing, the landing gear and the stores call for precise work.

It depends on the era you want to capture. Older machines wore dark camouflage, later air defense aircraft were overall gray. Pick the scheme before you reach for the paints.
