An unassembled and unpainted kit of a classic piston fighter in the most widespread aircraft scale. The designation F-51D points to the later period of the machine's service, when the aircraft already carried a designation under the new US Air Force system. Thanks to its size the model fits even a smaller display case, and it makes a sensible step for anyone who wants to build the longer-serving versions of the Mustang. Neither the number of parts nor the extent of the decal sheet is stated here.
The Mustang is among the best-known piston fighters of all. The combination of a clean aerodynamic design, a laminar flow wing and a supercharged V12 engine gave it the range that set it apart from most of its contemporaries. The D version, with a bubble canopy that gave a good view in every direction, is the most widespread variant. After American aircraft were redesignated, when the fighter category moved from the letter P to F, it flew as the F-51D, and in that form it also took part in the fighting on the Korean peninsula, this time mostly in the attack role against ground targets.
In 1:72 it is cleanliness of work that decides: thin coats of paint, small parts glued exactly in place and no engraving filled over. Get the cockpit ready before you close the fuselage, and mask the clear part. Polished natural metal is a rewarding but demanding scheme on the Mustang; the base has to be perfectly smooth, ideally over a gloss black foundation, and it pays to shade the individual panels with several metallic tones. Spray a gloss clear coat under the decals, and once it has dried even the surface out with a coat to the sheen you want. Keep the weathering discreet: a metal surface mainly takes fine exhaust streaks and the remains of service grime around the panel lines.
