The set contains four resin R-27EP missiles in 1:72 scale. It is not an aircraft model but an armament accessory with which you replace the coarser plastic missiles from the box or add stores the kit does not contain. The resin castings have crisper edges, a cleaner surface and more finely rendered control surfaces and fins than ordinary injection-molded plastic, which shows clearly in a small scale.
The R-27 is a family of Soviet medium-range air-to-air guided missiles of modular build: the individual versions differ in the type of seeker head and in the length of the rocket motor. The letter E in the designation points to the version with the longer motor and greater range, while the P version carries a passive radar seeker head that homes on the source of emissions. Under the NATO code this variant is listed as Alamo-F. Missiles of the R-27 family were carried by frontline fighters of Soviet and Russian design.
First wash the parts in lukewarm water with detergent to remove the remains of the mold release agent, otherwise the paint holds poorly. Cut the casting blocks off with a fine-toothed saw rather than with sprue cutters, as resin is brittle. Sanding should be done wet and with respiratory protection. Glue with cyanoacrylate glue (super glue), as cement for plastic does not react with resin. Lay down a primer before painting; the missile bodies are usually sprayed a light shade and the nose sections are picked out differently. Finally a fine wash brings out the engraved lines and an even flat clear coat unifies the whole.
The set is supplied unassembled and unpainted, as a resin accessory. The model, paints and glue are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
