A tree the wind would not let grow straight

The twisted pine is among the trees that grow on ridges, on rocky slopes and in places with poor soil. Wind and a shortage of nutrients do not let them form a regular cone, and it is precisely that irregularity that does a diorama a great service: an uneven crown looks more convincing than a perfectly symmetrical shape and gives a scene the character of mountain or abandoned country. The manufacturer recommends it for rural scenes, for the edges of woods, for reclaimed ground and for high mountain scenery.

Dimensions and contents of the package

In the package are two trees of different height, 12.7 cm and 15.2 cm. The difference in size is neither accident nor fault: two trees of exactly the same height side by side give away that they are products, whereas pieces of different growth give a group depth. Converting tells you which scale they suit: the taller of the two matches a tree about five and a half meters high in 1:35 scale, whereas in 1:87 it is already a massive thirteen meters.

Planting in the terrain

The cleanest way is to drill a hole in the base to suit the diameter of the trunk, set the tree into it and secure it with a drop of glue. The transition between trunk and ground is then worth finishing: a handful of scatter material, small stones or a tuft of static grass at the foot removes the impression that the tree is merely standing on the surface. The crown can be trimmed and thinned so that the sky shows through it.

A group gains even more if you add a third, markedly lower tree or a dry stump to the two. In nature nothing ever grows all at once and to the same height, and it is exactly that difference that tells living growth from a regularly planted avenue.
