A red shifted toward steel

This is a deep red held back by a grayish metallic undertone. Against a signal or fire-engine red it reads aged and settled, which is exactly the register a modeler looks for on surfaces that are meant to be red but not to shout. Straight from the bottle it serves as a final coat, and once thinned as a glaze that lets the pattern of the base show through.

Where it fits

It finds use on protective coatings over metal, on small technical parts, on markings and accessories, and anywhere the surface is meant to combine a red tone with an impression of metal. It also works well as an intermediate step in building a rusted surface: between a dark brown base and lighter orange patches it creates a transition that holds the whole change together.

Handling

The contents of the bottle have to be stirred thoroughly before work, otherwise the pigment stays at the bottom and the coat comes out pale. It can be thinned with water or with the manufacturer's thinner, and on smooth plastic the thinner is the better choice. Red shades generally cover less well, so it pays to count on several thin passes with the airbrush rather than one heavy one. The base matters here too: over a light gray base the tone comes out brighter, over a dark base it tends toward brown.

Package and coverage

The bottle holds 10 ml. Working with a glaze and with thin coats, that is a supply for a long time, because the shade is usually used on small areas. An opened bottle is best kept cool and out of direct sunlight, as heat speeds up evaporation and the contents thicken before they can be used up.
