About product

XB-1 Baby Boom in 1:72 scale, a kit from A&A Models

An injection-molded plastic kit of the supersonic demonstrator XB-1 Baby Boom in 1:72 scale from A&A Models, a Ukrainian brand that devotes itself to less usual subjects and works with a technology close to short-run molds. The package complements the plastic parts with photo-etched metal and decals. Among a shelf full of wartime machines this is a singular subject: it is not a historic aircraft but a machine writing the history of aviation right now.

The real subject

The XB-1 is a single-seat supersonic demonstrator of the American company Boom Supersonic, built as a scaled-down technology forerunner of the planned Overture supersonic airliner, in other words of an attempt at a return of supersonic passenger travel after the retirement of Concorde. It was powered by three General Electric J85 turbojets, and the machine has a slender fuselage, a sharply swept delta wing and a long pointed nose. On January 28, 2025 the XB-1 exceeded the speed of sound for the first time and became the first privately developed jet aircraft to do so, as well as the first civil aircraft to fly supersonically over the continental United States. On the same flight it broke the sound barrier twice more. The test program was closed at the beginning of February 2025; the task of the machine was to prove technologies and procedures for the future airliner. The model you build is therefore not a replica of the past but of the present.

Building and painting tips

Glue the plastic parts with liquid cement for polystyrene and the etched components with cyanoacrylate glue. Given the short-run character of the mold, dry-fit the main assemblies and count on sanding the mating surfaces. The key is the finish: the XB-1 wears a pure white gloss scheme, so thorough filling, a good white primer and several thin coats from an airbrush all pay off, as seams and scratches will not hide under white gloss. Apply the decals over a gloss coat. Do not overdo the weathering on this machine, as it is a new, clean aircraft and not combat equipment.

Who the model is for

  • Collectors looking for a completely unconventional, non-military subject
  • Those interested in modern aviation and the return of supersonic travel
  • Modelers who dare to take on a gloss white finish
  • More experienced builders, as a short-run mold calls for patience

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

A single-seat supersonic demonstrator of the American company Boom Supersonic. It is not a historic military aircraft but a present-day test machine proving technologies for a planned supersonic airliner, that is for the return of supersonic passenger travel after Concorde.

Yes. On January 28, 2025 it exceeded the speed of sound and became the first privately developed jet aircraft to manage it. During the same flight it flew supersonically three times in all.

A Ukrainian maker of injection-molded plastic kits focused on aviation subjects off the beaten track. The molds are close to short-run technology, so they offer interesting subjects, but the build calls for care and experience.

Rather not. Besides the short-run character of the parts, the painting itself is demanding: the aircraft wears a gloss white scheme that mercilessly reveals every untreated seam or scratch.
