About product

Omask 1:48 Bell P-39 Airacobra — wheel bay plugs (for Hasegawa / Hobby 2000)

A set of plugs of flexible foam shaped for the wheel bays of a P-39 Airacobra model in 1:48 scale. It is NOT a kit or an aircraft model — it is a masking accessory for the kits from Hasegawa and Hobby 2000, which you have to have.

What the plugs are for

You paint the wheel bay first — and then you have to mask it while the model is sprayed from the outside, or you will ruin the finished interior with overspray. Masking a deep, irregular cavity with tape and cotton wool is a nuisance and it does not seal anyway. A foam plug goes into the bay, compresses and seals it by itself — it does not have to fit to hundredths of a millimeter like a hard 3D print and it holds without glue. Once the paint is dry you take it out. It also protects the bay from dust and sanding slurry and it is reusable.

The real subject

The Bell P-39 Airacobra is among the most unusually arranged fighters of the Second World War. Its engine sat behind the pilot, in the middle of the fuselage; the propeller was driven by a long shaft running under the cockpit, and a cannon sat on the propeller axis. You did not climb into the cockpit under a sliding canopy either, but through automobile-style doors in the side. The Airacobra also had a nosewheel, tricycle landing gear — at a time when the classic tailwheel arrangement ruled among fighters. That also means an entirely different layout of the wheel bays than on contemporary fighters, and therefore different masking. American pilots found the P-39 unsuited to high altitude, but in the Soviet Union, under Lend-Lease, it became the machine of the top aces — it fought low over the ground, where its qualities came into their own.

Compatibility and use

  • Intended for the Hasegawa and Hobby 2000 kits in 1:48 — the plugs will not fit a kit from another manufacturer.
  • First paint the interior of the nose and main bays and let it dry, and only then put the plugs in.
  • Press the plug in so that it lines up with the outline of the bay and does not stick out anywhere.
  • Once the spraying is finished and dry, pull the plug out.

A modeling accessory. The model, paints and glue are not included in the package.

FAQ

No. It is a masking accessory — foam plugs for the wheel bays. You have to have your own P-39 Airacobra kit in 1:48 from Hasegawa or Hobby 2000.

No. The set is shaped for the Hasegawa and Hobby 2000 kits. Bay plugs are made separately for each kit, because every kit has its bays shaped differently — they will not fit another one.

A wheel bay is a deep, irregular cavity that neither tape nor cotton wool seals properly. Flexible foam adapts to the shape of the cavity when compressed and lets no overspray in. Once the paint is dry it simply pulls out.

Yes. The Airacobra had nosewheel tricycle landing gear rather than a tailwheel, so the layout and the shape of the bays differ from most fighters of the period. That is why a separate set of plugs is made for it.
