A clear polyester sheet for making your own glazing, also suitable for vacuum forming.
Responsibility details are not available.
A clear polyester sheet from which you can make the glazing that is not in the kit box. It comes into use on conversions, on vacuum-formed models and anywhere the original clear part is missing, has yellowed or has broken. At the same time the material serves as a blank for forming over a buck of hardwood or resin.
The sheet is cut with scissors, bends without the fold whitening and is joined either with spots of cyanoacrylate glue or, better, with PVA glue for canopies, which becomes clear as it dries and does not fog the surface. The frames of the glazing are masked with thin strips of tape and the paint is applied to them in thin coats so that it does not run under the edge.
Cut a template out of paper first. The unrolled shape of glazing is usually different from what one expects, and a paper trial saves you cutting the film twice. Fit the finished clear part right at the end, after all sanding and varnishing, because the dust from abrasives burrows into the soft surface and can no longer be polished out.
For vacuum forming, prepare the buck a little smaller than the finished part is to be, because the material stretches over it and adds its own thickness. It is heated evenly until the sheet begins to sag, and only then is it drawn over. An overheated sheet ripples and loses the optical clarity that no amount of polishing will bring back.
