A tyrannosaur and three pens for it

The tyrannosaur kit of the Planosaurus line rests on a clever idea: the outer body can be lifted off and the whole skeleton stays underneath, so that one model shows the animal from the outside as well as from within. The three marker pens in the package are matched in shade to exactly this subject, so there is no searching through bottles and mixing a sample that then cannot be repeated a second time anyway.

What can be done with the three shades

One tone usually carries the pattern on the back, the second darkens the folds of the skin and the hollows between the muscles, and the third lightens the belly and the underside of the tail. It is exactly that difference between a darker underside and a lighter back which decides whether a dinosaur looks like a plastic toy or like an animal. On the skeleton it helps to outline the edges of the vertebrae and the ribs, so that the structure is not lost in shadow.

Running the pen over plastic

The marker is shaken before the work and the tip is charged on a piece of sprue, so that the first stroke is neither dry nor overloaded. On smooth plastic the color slides and dries quickly, so the strokes are run in one direction and returned to only once they have set. Color can be let into engraved lines by placing the tip at the start of the groove and letting it flow in by itself. Any excess on an edge is wiped off with a cotton swab before it hardens. Anyone who wants to bring out the texture of the scales can go over the dried area with a subdued stroke of an almost dry tip. The model is meanwhile held by the inner skeleton or by the sprue frame, so that no fingerprints are left on the finished surface.
