Xpress Monastic Green

The Monastic Green shade

Monastic Green is a green tone from the Xpress Color acrylic line by Vallejo. The name refers to a monk's robe, and the character of the shade matches that: it is a muted, subduedly dark green, not a bright grass color. It suits the robes, cloaks and cloth parts of figures, but also green shield faces, holsters and the canvas parts of equipment, where the color is meant to be held back and not to draw attention.

How the Xpress Color line works

The paint is thin enough that once applied it slides down into the lowest places of the surface. In the folds of cloth and under the edges of parts more of it gathers and the shade darkens there, whereas on the raised areas only a thin film holds and the color stays light. The base tone and the shading arise at once, in a single coat. The covering is partial, so the lighter the ground, the brighter the result.

Application tips

• It does not have to be thinned and is applied with a brush straight from the container.
• Stir the contents of the container before work, as the pigment settles at the bottom.
• Choose a light ground, as the green will lose its saturation on a dark one.
• Lead the brush smoothly and without going back, or the shadow will smear.
• Draw a puddle gathered in a deep fold off with a dry brush while the paint is wet.

Terms of supply

A container of paint as described is supplied. A figure, brushes, a ground and thinner are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise. For thinning, cleaning the tools and storage, follow the manufacturer's instructions on the packaging.
