What a scalpel is for on a model
Fine work that needs a thin blade and a sensitive hand. Shaving a sprue stub flush with the surface, releasing a delicate part, removing flash, cutting a decal out of its sheet, scoring a groove before scribing, trimming masking tape in place on the model. Everywhere a heavier knife would push material ahead of itself, a scalpel simply passes through.
How to choose
By handle
The classic slim metal handle is light and gives the best feel, but after a long session it presses into the fingers. A thicker non-slip grip is more comfortable and suits long cutting runs, as when masking or working through a batch of profiles. The handle system also decides which blade shapes will fit it.
By blade shape
A pointed blade is the most adaptable: it cuts with the point and the belly and gets into a corner. A curved blade is better on longer drawn cuts, because the edge carries the cut along its whole length. Angled and scraping edges serve for trimming and cleaning surfaces. Stock up in spare blades.
Disposable scalpels
The complete tool including blade and cap. They are convenient because nothing has to be swapped, and practical where a guaranteed fresh edge matters — cutting decals or masking tape, for instance.
How to cut with a scalpel
Cut in two passes. The first stroke only establishes the path, with almost no pressure; the following ones deepen the groove. Pressure in a single pass is the main reason a blade wanders or snaps. Lead it along a steel edge from rules and squares and keep a cutting mat under the part, which blunts the edge far less than a hard bench. Never use a scalpel to lever anything — a thin edge breaks in a fraction of a second.
What goes with a scalpel
- Hobby knives — the sturdier alternative for thicker material and real pressure.
- Tweezers — holding a small part steady during the cut.
- Sanding — levelling the edge once the cut is made.
- Magnifiers — at tenths of a millimetre they decide the outcome.
For cuts through thicker material a scalpel is not enough, and a tool from saws takes over.
