Imperial mounted arquebusiers of the Thirty Years' War, 1:72 scale. Lighter cavalry with a short firearm, which brings reconnaissance and fighting at a distance into a scene.
Responsibility details are not available.
Alongside the heavy cuirassiers the Habsburg army also raised units of mounted arquebusiers. These were horsemen with a short wheel-lock firearm, protected only by a helmet and at most a breastplate, whose task was to cover the flanks, seize fords and wage the small war in the approaches. Without them an army of the seventeenth century would have moved blind, because it was precisely these men who brought in news of the enemy.
A diorama with a gun and a foot formation on it shows a battle. As soon as a pair of arquebusiers at an easy trot is added to it, the time of the scene changes to the moment before the clash. This transformation costs nothing extra, only the right placing of the figures. A lone rider at the edge of the groundwork, turned away from the main group, moreover suggests space beyond the boundary of the model, which is the cheapest way of making a scene look larger.
The package holds the castings alone; neither paints nor a base are enclosed.
The edge of a wood, a shallow ford or a sunken lane between fields are among the places where light cavalry had real work to do. Terrain with a difference in height will moreover bring such figures to life, because a horseman on a slope looks different from one on the level.
