The DSPIAE AT-HW modeling hand saw

A saw for plastic, resin and softer metals with a body of aluminum alloy. A hand saw solves situations where neither a knife nor nippers are enough: dividing a part in the middle, shortening a profile, opening a press-fitted section or cutting in a place where a knife would need far too many strokes. Against a knife it removes material in a narrow slot and does not push it to the sides, so the part does not crack.

The workmanship

The body combines aluminum alloy with plastic and stainless steel parts. The cap is attached magnetically and can be fitted to the opposite end, where it serves to extend the handle, so the saw is held more comfortably and at the same time is not dangerous when set down. The blades are interchangeable and the manufacturer makes several tooth patterns for the saw, which are sold separately.

How to work with it

• Cut by pulling toward you and without pressure; the saw should cut under the weight of the blade itself.
• Start with a shallow notch at a small angle; with the saw held upright the blade slips.
• Guide the cut smoothly, as stopping and starting again leaves a step in the edge.
• For fine parts choose a blade with denser teeth, as a coarse one would tear the material.

Who it is for

The saw is for modelers who rework parts, divide them and build conversions. It also comes into play with resin sets, where a massive casting block has to be separated off. Blades are not included in the package unless the supplier expressly states so.

The teeth are sharp; keep the saw out of the reach of children and set it down with the cap on.
