A combo pack of sanding sponges from the Taiwanese brand Madworks. It holds five grits, from 320 up to 1000, four pieces of each, so twenty sanding strips in all. Compared with sandpaper the sponge is flexible: it follows the shape of the part, so it does not sand flats into a curved surface or on the join of a fuselage and does not sharpen the edges.
Work through the grits and do not skip any, otherwise deeper scratches will stay in the surface and will only show up under the varnish. You can sand dry or with water; water carries the dust away, the sanding is faster and the sponge does not clog. Between the steps wipe the surface and check it against a raking light, which shows the scratches up better than a look from above. Do not breathe in the dust from sanding plastic, and for longer dry work put on a respirator. Wash a worn sponge out; once it has dried it goes on sanding.
For anyone who needs to cover the whole ordinary sanding sequence in a single purchase, from cleaning up sprue nubs to preparing the surface for the varnish. The manufacturer also makes the sponges separately by grit and in several thicknesses, so they can be topped up piece by piece. Putty, primer and paints are not included in the package.
