About product

Studio27 1:24 decal sheet, Toyota Celica ST165 Tamoil, No. 7, 1992 (for Aoshima)

Studio27 supplies this subject as a standalone decal sheet in 1:24 scale. Let us say it plainly right at the start: this is not a kit. You are not buying the car, you are buying its markings. The basis has to be the Toyota Celica GT-Four ST165 kit from the company Aoshima, which you obtain separately. And one more notice: the ST165 is the first generation of the Celica GT-Four; its successor the ST185 has a different body and decals for the ST165 do not fit it (a different sheet exists for the ST185, intended for the Tamiya kit).

The real subject

The Celica GT-Four ST165 combined a turbocharged engine with all-wheel drive and opened the way to the top of the World Rally Championship for the Japanese brands, where Europe had ruled until then. Alongside the works cars, though, a number of private and semi-works crews raced as well, writing their own sponsors on the hood, and this is exactly where the point of this sheet begins. Tamoil is an oil company; in rallying it figured as a sponsor and its white and red colors give car number 7 from 1992 an appearance you will not find in any box with a kit. That is precisely why collectors buy sheets: a kit has one livery, at most two, but a rally special went out in practically every event with different markings and a different race number. Anyone who wants a particular car from a particular event reaches for decals.

Tips for applying the decals and for painting

The most important sentence of the whole description: a decal has to go onto a glossy base. Matte clear coat is microscopically rough, air stays under the film and the edges of the marking light up with a silver rim that you will not put right. The procedure is therefore: paint, gloss clear coat, decals. The sponsor lettering on the Celica runs across the sides, the fenders and the transitions at the lights, so have decal softener ready, because on curved areas the marking will not adhere without it and will wrinkle. When everything is dry comes the covering clear coat, which sinks the decals into the surface, and only after that weathering. That order is not a recommendation but a necessity. And since we are talking about rallying, not about a circuit: feel free to dust the model, dirty it and leave it a scuffed front end. A clean rally car does not exist.

Who the sheet is for

  • Owners of the Celica ST165 kit from Aoshima who want a livery other than the one from the box.
  • Collectors of Group A cars and of sponsor schemes of the 1990s.
  • Modelers who build a series of one car at various events.
  • Those who want to try out working with softener and the weathering of a rally special.

The package contains decals only. The kit, paints, clear coat, glue and softener are not included.

FAQ

It is not. This is strictly a decal sheet. You have to buy the Toyota Celica GT-Four ST165 kit from the company Aoshima separately.

An oil company which at the time in question acted as a sponsor. Its brand forms the basis of the livery of car number 7, and you will not find such a scheme in the kit, which is why sheets are bought.

No. The ST185 is a different, newer generation with a different body. The shapes and dimensions of the areas differ, so decals for the ST165 do not fit it.

Apply them over gloss clear coat, not over a matte finish. Use softener on curved areas, coat them with clear coat once they are dry and only at the very end weather the model.
