Williams FW09B — British Grand Prix 1984 in 1:20 scale from Studio27. A multimedia kit (Full Detail Kit) for experienced modelers — resin, metal castings, photo-etched parts and rubber tires, not an ordinary plastic kit.
Responsibility details are not available.
A multimedia kit from Studio27 in 1:20 scale. It is not an injection-molded plastic model and it is not a kit for beginners. The designation Full Detail Kit means a combination of materials: resin for the body and the main parts, metal castings for the small and highly loaded elements, photo-etched sheet for grilles, straps and thin edges, and with them rubber tires and decals. The parts have no pins or sockets as plastic ones do — the build rests on dry fitting, sanding and fitting together.
The point of such a set is simple: nobody makes this car in this specification in plastic. Short-run multimedia kits are the only way to one particular car from one particular Grand Prix — hence the limited availability and the interest of collectors.
The Williams FW09 was Williams's first turbo car with a Honda engine, and the 1984 season was hard — for a long time the chassis could not cope with the sudden surge of turbo power. During the year the team therefore entered the FW09B evolution: for the first time at the British Grand Prix of 1984. It brought revised aerodynamics, reworked sidepods and a lighter chassis — an effort to tame the behavior of the car without losing the power of the Honda. Behind the wheel that season Keke Rosberg and Jacques Laffite took turns. The model therefore captures the transitional, improved version of the car — for a Williams collector a different specification from the original FW09.
Before you start painting, wash all the parts in warm water with detergent and a brush. Mold release agent stays on the castings; if you do not wash it off, the paint will not grip and will start to peel once dry. It is by far the most common reason a resin model turns out badly. Once dry, apply filler primer — only that gives the surface a uniform, adhesive base.
It also holds that resin cannot be glued with plastic cement; cyanoacrylate glue is necessary. Cut the casting blocks off with a saw, never with nippers — the casting would crack — and clean up the flash carefully. Resin dust is harmful to health: sand wet, with a respirator and in a ventilated space. Bend the photo-etched parts with a bender, or with a razor blade and tweezers. Apply the decals onto a glossy surface and seal them with varnish.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted, as a multimedia kit. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
