What it is

A finished water surface supplied in the form of a sheet, two pieces measuring 35 x 25 cm. It is intended for H0 scale, that is 1:87, in which the longer side corresponds to roughly thirty meters and the shorter to just under twenty-two. Together they will make, say, a quiet bay, a pond behind a building or a stretch of river under a bridge.

Where you will use it

A body of water benefits a scene a great deal, because it is the one place that reflects light, and the eye notices it before anything else. It suits a mill, a landing stage, a quarry flooded by groundwater and the area under a railroad bridge. Compared with compounds poured into a channel, a sheet has two advantages: it is ready at once, and there is no risk of the compound running under the base and spreading over your workshop.

Setting in place and adjustments

First trace the shape of the channel or the bank, then trim the sheet with a sharp knife run against a metal ruler, and do it in several light passes; one heavy pass will tear the edge. Try the assembly dry and only then set it in place permanently. Covering the edges is the key: hide the edge under a bank, under stones, under driftwood or under growth, otherwise the scene will give away that the surface is an inserted piece. Suggest the transition from shallows to deeper water with a darker glaze under the sheet or by dusting pigment along the bank. Add reeds, ducks and boats at the very end.
