About product

Italian Job, Macchi C.202/C.205 in international service 1:72 (Tiger Head Models)

A decal sheet in 1:72 scale devoted to the Italian Macchi C.202 and C.205 fighters and their users outside Italy. It is an accessory for a plastic kit, not a model of an aircraft: the sheet brings national insignia, tactical numbers and accompanying lettering with which a model gets a particular identity. Tiger Head Models is a Turkish maker of decal sheets and resin accessories that concentrates on the less usual users of well-known types. The manufacturer's catalog gives the particular composition of the schemes and the range of service lettering.

The real subject

The Macchi C.202 Folgore came about by fitting a liquid-cooled inverted V12 engine into an airframe derived from an older fighter with a radial engine. The improvement in performance was marked and the type became the backbone of Italian fighter aviation in the Second World War period. The following C.205 Veltro got a more powerful powerplant and heavier armament and was among the best Italian fighters of all. Both types reached further users during the war and after it, so the same airframe appears in strikingly different camouflage and markings — and that is exactly what this sheet draws on.

How to seat the decals

Decals hold best on a smooth glossy base, so coat the places under the motifs with a gloss varnish first and let it cure thoroughly. Slide the motif off its backing paper in water, seat it on the model, soak the surplus water up and add a setting solution. A decal softener helps the decal flow around rivets and engraved lines, so that it does not look like a sticker. At the end, go over the whole model with a matte or semi-matte varnish — that makes the glossy outline of the carrier film disappear.

Who the set is for

  • modelers who want to build an Italian fighter in less-seen markings
  • builders for whom the decals enclosed with a kit are not enough
  • collectors mapping the use of one type among various operators
  • more experienced modelers who work with a glossy base and a decal softener

This is a standalone decal sheet. The kit, paints, varnishes and a decal softener are not included in the package.

FAQ

No. This is a sheet of decals only. A Macchi C.202 or C.205 kit in 1:72 scale has to be obtained separately.

The exact number of schemes is not stated here. You will find the composition of the markings in the manufacturer's catalog; the sheet is aimed at the users of both types outside Italy.

On a flat surface a thin layer of air stays between the decal and the paint, which shows as a silvery edge. A glossy base prevents that and the carrier film practically disappears.

Yes, as long as they take trouble over preparing the base. Applying decals from aftermarket sheets does not differ from those in a kit; they are only thinner and call for more careful handling.
