A detail set in 1:48 scale replacing the main landing gear wheels on models of the early versions of the P-51 Mustang fighter. It is an accessory to a kit — there are cast resin parts only in the package, no airframe of an airplane. The manufacturer is the Turkish brand Tiger Head Models, which besides decal sheets also offers small resin accessories. The exact contents of the package, the number of parts and the form of the hubs are given in the manufacturer's data; the set carries a closer specification of the type of wheels there, and we recommend checking it before buying so that it matches the version being built.
Wheels are among the parts by which the level of a model is judged fastest. In kits they tend to be split in the vertical plane, so that after gluing a seam is left exactly across the tread of the tire, and the shape tends to be simplified. A resin replacement is usually cast in one piece, has crisper detail in the tread and the hub and often a suggested flattening of the tire under load as well, which gives a model an impression of weight. On early Mustangs the form of the wheels is, moreover, one of the details by which the individual versions differ from one another, so the replacement is not merely cosmetic.
First wash the castings in warm soapy water, so that the mold release agent comes off the surface. Cut the casting block off with a saw in a place that will be hidden once fitted, and level the spot with sandpaper wet and with respiratory protection. It is glued with super glue; cement for plastic has no effect on resin. Apply a primer before painting. Do not spray the tire pure black — a slightly lighter gray-black tone looks more faithful in scale; then finish the hub with a brush and tidy the transition with a thin wash.
This is a resin accessory. The model of the airplane, paints, glue and tools are not included in the package.
