About product

MAFFS 1:72 - a firefighting system for the Lockheed C-130 Hercules

The set is made by 3D printing technology and represents the MAFFS modular airborne firefighting system, of the kind that is loaded into the cargo compartment of the four-engine Hercules. In the package you will find the parts of the system only, not a kit of the aircraft - that you need to have from the ordinary range of plastic models in 1:72 scale. The printed parts have a fine surface texture and crisp edges, so once painted they look credible even in an open cargo compartment.

The real subject

MAFFS is a portable installation that turns an ordinary transport aircraft into a firefighting special for the duration of its deployment. The outfit consists of pressure tanks for the retardant and a discharge pipe; after the end of a mission or a season it is taken out of the machine and the aircraft returns to its usual transport service. It is deployed where, during extensive forest fires, the capacity of classic firefighting aircraft has to be increased quickly. It is precisely the modularity that is the main reason the set suits dioramas with an open rear - a viewer understands at once what kind of deployment is involved.

Building and painting tips

First wash the 3D printed parts in lukewarm soapy water, so that no residue from manufacture is left on the surface and the paint holds well. Remove the supports with a sharp scalpel and sand the marks left by them with fine sandpaper, preferably with respiratory protection. It is glued with super glue (cyanoacrylate); ordinary cement for plastic does not take here. Apply a thin layer of primer before painting; the tanks and the pipe come out once the shadows are brought out with a dark wash and the edges given a light dry brush.

Who the set is for

  • modelers who build the Hercules with an open cargo compartment
  • those interested in civil, rescue and firefighting aircraft
  • makers of dioramas on the theme of fighting forest fires
  • more advanced builders with experience of printed and resin parts

The set contains supplementary parts only, not a kit of the aircraft. It is supplied unassembled and unpainted; glue, paints and other accessories are not part of the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It is not. This is a supplementary set representing the firefighting system that is loaded into the cargo compartment. The kit of the aircraft itself in 1:72 scale has to be obtained separately.

Super glue based on cyanoacrylate. Ordinary cement for plastic, which dissolves a joint, does not work on 3D printed material.

We recommend it. Lukewarm soapy water and a soft brush remove the residue from manufacture, on which the paint would hold badly and could peel off.

It is more suitable for modelers who already have experience of removing supports and of gluing with super glue. The parts are rather small and less forgiving of rough handling.
