A bust of an Eritrean Ascari of 1935 in 1:10 scale, a resin casting with an unusual colonial subject.
Responsibility details are not available.
A collector's bust of an Eritrean Ascari as he looked in 1935 at the opening of the Italian campaign into Abyssinia. Royal Model casts it in polyurethane resin, and the 1:10 size gives room to work out the features of the face and the characteristic headgear in a detail that smaller formats do not allow.
The Ascari were native soldiers recruited in Italian Eritrea from the end of the nineteenth century and formed the backbone of the colonial forces in Africa. They wore a tarboosh with a tassel, whose color distinguished the individual battalions, and a belted tunic. Their reputation rested above all on their endurance on marches in mountainous country. The year 1935 is a landmark for them, because that is exactly when they entered the fighting against the Ethiopian army in strength.
Before painting, wipe the remains of the molding agent off the surface and level the mating surface with a fine file. Fill any bubbles with modeling putty and spray the whole part with filler; it is only on that that you can tell whether the surface really is smooth. The darker skin of the real subject calls for careful work with the shadows, so it pays to build the shade up in thin layers and fine-tune the contrast with glazes.
The package contains the resin casting alone; paints, putty and glue are not included.
