An injection-molded plastic kit of the British passenger and car ferry hovercraft SR.N4 in 1:144 scale from Airfix. The model depicts the large Mountbatten-class transport hovercraft that, from the late 1960s, carried passengers and cars across the English Channel. The package offers cabin glazing and an openable/closable bow loading door — check the exact contents and decals against the manufacturer's part number for this item.
The SR.N4 was the largest civilian passenger and car hovercraft of its time. It entered service in 1969 and reliably cut the crossing of the English Channel down to a matter of tens of minutes. The craft rode on a cushion of air held by a flexible skirt and was powered by four Rolls-Royce Proteus turboprop engines, which turned large air propellers on swiveling pylons that provided both thrust and steering. Its spacious hull held passengers as well as cars.
Glue the parts with liquid plastic cement and carefully sand and fill the seams of the large hull. Glue the superstructure glazing carefully with canopy cement so the clear parts do not fog; half the roof can be left transparent for a view into the interior. Assemble the air propellers on their pylons precisely so they follow the shape of the hull. After applying gloss varnish and decals, highlight details with a wash; a display stand also suits this model well.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints, and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
