About product

Avro Lancaster B.Mk.III Dambuster, 1:32, HK Models

This flagship injection-molded kit from the maker HK Models in 1:32 scale captures the Lancaster in its famous conversion for the raid on the German dams. The package contains more than 824 parts, a fully equipped interior, rotating gun turrets, a detailed nose, a photo-etched fret and decals. There is also a detailed Upkeep bouncing bomb and the modified underside of the fuselage with its special mounting, which the Lancasters of No. 617 Squadron had in place of the usual bomb bay doors. Count on enormous dimensions: a span of 972 mm and a length of 664 mm. The finished model needs a really large table and display case, so it is worth measuring your space first.

The real subject

The Avro Lancaster was the main British night heavy bomber of the Second World War, powered by four Merlin engines. On the night of 16 to 17 May 1943, specially modified Lancasters of No. 617 Squadron took off for Operation Chastise, the attack on the dams in the Ruhr. They carried the bouncing bomb designed by Barnes Wallis: the cylindrical charge was given backspin before release, and on striking the water it skipped like a flat stone, jumped the protective anti-torpedo nets, sank to the bottom at the dam wall and exploded there. Because of the bomb the machines had to give up their bomb bay doors and were given an external mounting with a drive to spin it. The Möhne and Eder dams were breached, but the price was high, and a large part of the crews did not return. It was this mission that gave the squadron the nickname Dambusters.

Building and painting tips

This is a demanding project for experienced modelers. Work in sections: first complete and paint the interior of the fuselage entirely, and only then close the fuselage up, because once it is glued you can no longer get inside. Bond the parts with liquid cement for plastic, which runs into the joints by capillary action. Large surfaces deserve an airbrush and a primer, which will reveal scratches and imperfect joints. Do not make the night camouflage with its black undersurface pure black: lighten it toward a dark gray, or the model will look like a silhouette and the detail will disappear on it. Clear-coat with gloss before the decals and flatten it afterwards.

Who the model is for

  • Advanced modelers who want a large, prestigious piece for a collection.
  • Enthusiasts of the RAF, Bomber Command and Operation Chastise.
  • Collectors of the large 1:32 scale who have enough room to display it.
  • Modelers who enjoy long projects with a rich interior and plenty of detail.

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It refers to Operation Chastise of May 1943, when modified Lancasters of No. 617 Squadron attacked the German dams in the Ruhr with bouncing bombs. That earned the squadron the nickname Dambusters.

Yes. In this edition the manufacturer states a detailed Upkeep bouncing bomb and the conversion of the underside of the fuselage that the Lancasters of No. 617 Squadron were given in place of the usual bomb bay doors.

The span is 972 mm and the length 664 mm. It is therefore an almost meter-long model, so check that you have enough room both for the build and for a display case.

No. Given the number of parts, the size and the amount of interior, it is a project for experienced modelers. It calls for an airbrush, patience and planning of the sequence.
