The opening set of the Royal Model line for the giant German self-propelled mortar of 60 cm caliber brings photo-etched components for the upper structure, the platforms and the covers. Metal stands in for plastic sheet where its thickness would be glaring on a model.
Karl was the heaviest self-propelled weapon Germany built; the six examples produced were given the names Adam, Eva, Thor, Odin, Loki and Ziu. The machine weighed over a hundred and twenty tons, moved under its own power at walking pace and for greater distances was transported by rail slung between a pair of special cars. Firing took place from a fixed position and after every shot the barrel had to be loaded again with the help of a crane. Its use at Sevastopol in 1942 and in 1944 in Warsaw is among the best-known episodes of its service. Dozens of men made up the crew and a rail siding and a crane of its own belonged to a position, so a model shows to advantage in an extensive scene with figures.
Seat the sizeable photo-etched panels gradually from one corner, so that they do not twist. Level the surface underneath beforehand, because metal accentuates every unevenness. For vertical surfaces a glue with a longer setting time suits well.
The set does not contain the chassis or any chemicals.
