Footwear belongs among the details everybody notices on a figure. The resin set of boots of the German infantry from Royal Model brings several different patterns in 1:35 scale for modifying figures and for completing a scene.
The German infantry went into the war in black marching boots with a hobnailed sole. They were comfortable on the march but expensive and demanding of leather, so from 1941 on they were gradually replaced by lower lace-up boots completed with canvas gaiters. Both versions then occurred side by side until the end of the war, and a mixture of them is common in period photographs. Among tankers and mountain units further patterns of footwear came on top of that, so one formation could look different every time.
Most often it will serve in converting a figure whose legs you want to replace or that you want to set in a different stance. The second use is scenic: a boot thrown down by a trench or by a wreck is a detail that stops the viewer. Rinse the castings before painting, cut the remains of the gates off and level the surface with a fine abrasive. Suggest dried mud with pigment on the sole and the heel only. Try the position of the boots dry so that the figure stands naturally.
