A civilian fate belongs to a wartime scene as much as hardware does. The resin figure of an evacuated civilian with luggage from the Italian brand Royal Model represents a person carrying away whatever he can manage, and it is cut for 1:35 scale.
The front of the Second World War swept across inhabited country and drove millions of people out of their homes. People left on foot with whatever could be carried or loaded onto a cart: a quilt, a suitcase, a bundle of clothes, a crate with poultry. Columns of civilians blocked the roads, mixed with retreating units and became one of the strongest images of the war of all. That is exactly why a single figure like this can change the reading of a whole scene with military hardware. Beside it the viewer realizes at once who pays the most for the fighting.
Civilian clothing has no uniform shade, and that is its strength: the coat, the trousers and the headgear can each be faded differently. Reach for muted earth colors and add dust to the hem of the coat and to the footwear. Paint the luggage separately while it is still loose, otherwise you will not reach the undersides later.
