Ferns for woodland and shady scenes: 1:35 Fern from Royal Model fills out the undergrowth in 1:35 scale and also serves as natural camouflage for vehicles.
Responsibility details are not available.
A fern has a shape that cannot be mistaken: a long pinnate frond growing from a single point into a fan. That is exactly why it works so well in a diorama, because at first glance it tells a damp wood from a dry hillside. The Royal Model accessory consists of a photo-etched metal fret carrying fern fronds alone, in two sizes.
Ferns seek shade and damp: forest floors, stream banks, north-facing slopes, fallen trunks. In the temperate zone they form the continuous undergrowth of beech and spruce woods, and in the tropics they reach far greater size. For a modeler that opens up scenes from the Ardennes, from the Hürtgen Forest, from the Normandy hedgerows and from the jungles of the Pacific. The manufacturer also shows a second use: fronds tucked into a helmet net or stacked on the armor of a tank as natural camouflage.
First bend the frond slightly along its length so that it does not lie flat; a flat fan gives the model away at once. Degrease the metal before painting and spray a primer. The underside tends to be lighter and more matte than the top, in spring fresh to yellow, by late summer dark and drying out at the edges, so leave out a uniform green tone. Plant them in groups, never in a row, and cover the base with a coarser forest scatter with needles and small stones.
The fronds come unpainted; the package does not contain paints or glue.
