A set of cast helmets for Israeli tank crews. The abbreviation CVC denotes a helmet for the crew of a combat vehicle – with earphones and with a microphone on a boom.
Responsibility details are not available.
The abbreviation CVC comes from the English term for a member of a combat vehicle crew and denotes the type of helmet worn by tankers all over the world. It is not a combat helmet for infantry: the shell is meant to protect the head above all against knocks against the armor while driving over rough ground, and the main function is performed by the built-in earphones and the microphone on a flexible boom. Without them the crew inside a noisy vehicle could not make themselves understood.
Israeli armored units adapted this type to their own needs and wear it on Centurions, on modernized Pattons and on Merkavas. The shape of the shell and the attachment of the cable differ from period to period, so the helmet is one of the quickest ways of telling the viewer which years a scene belongs to. On a figure leaning out of a turret it is also the part the eye catches first.
The helmet on its own is not enough. A cord leads from the earphones to the vehicle, ending in a connector that the tanker plugs into the socket at his station. In 1:35 it can be imitated with thin soft wire or with a strand wound around a needle, run across the figure's shoulder and hidden under the rim of the hatch. Without that, the connection looks like nothing more than a suggested cap with a band.
The parts come attached to a casting block, from which they are cut off with a fine-toothed saw, not with cutters – the material is harder and more brittle than plastic and likes to tear a piece off the edge. The cut is then sanded and the surface degreased, because paint does not hold on a greasy surface. They are glued with cyanoacrylate glue; ordinary modeling glue for plastic does not work here. It pays to paint the earphones and the cable separately, before you put the helmet on the figure's head.
