About product

Reskit 1:35 - LAU-3A Hydra rocket pods for the US Army and Navy (2 pcs)

This product is not a kit and it is not a model of an aircraft or a helicopter: it is a 3D-printed detail accessory in 1:35 scale. The box holds 2 pieces, that is a pair for both sides of the machine. The manufacturer intends the set for US Army and US Navy equipment, both aircraft and helicopters.

What a rocket pod is and what makes the LAU-3A special

A rocket pod is a container of unguided rockets carried under a pylon, under the wing or under a helicopter. It fires a salvo and is used for saturation fire against ground targets. The LAU-3A is a Western weapon, of American design: a nineteen-tube pod for unguided rockets of 2.75 inch, that is 70 mm caliber (the family we know today under the name Hydra). Its appearance earned it the nickname shotgun. It was part of the typical armament of US Army and Navy machines from the Vietnam era onward, and a range of 2.75 inch stores is still in use today in various forms.

East versus West: the crucial difference

This is an American rocket pod and it belongs under American machines. The Soviet counterparts, for example the UB series of pods for 57 mm rockets, are different in design and in appearance and belong with Eastern Bloc equipment. Hanging an American rocket pod under a Mi-24 (or, the other way round, a Soviet one under a Cobra) is a factual mistake that a knowledgeable viewer spots at once.

Why aftermarket and how to work with it

A rocket pod is a cylinder full of tubes, and plastic kit parts usually have those tubes blanked off, shallow and thick-walled. 3D printing gives genuinely open, deep tubes with thin rims, which shows clearly on the model; it is one of the most rewarding details you can add. Resin will not bond with cement for polystyrene: you need cyanoacrylate glue (super glue) or epoxy. First wash the parts in soapy water (print resin residue keeps paint from adhering). Always sand wet and do not breathe the dust, which is harmful to health. The thin tube rims are fragile and crack easily, so fit the rocket pods to the model at the very end.

Who the set is for

  • builders of American helicopters and aircraft in 1:35 scale
  • modelers building the Vietnam era of the US Army and Navy
  • those bothered by the blanked-off tubes of plastic rocket pods
  • diorama makers who want faithful stores on both sides of the machine

The accessory is supplied unassembled and unpainted. It is not a kit. The base model, glue and paints are not included in the package.

FAQ

Western: it is an American rocket pod with 19 tubes for rockets of 2.75 inch (70 mm) caliber. The Soviet UB series pods (57 mm caliber) are entirely different equipment and the two cannot be swapped; an American store under a Mi-24 would be a mistake.

The manufacturer intends it for US Army and US Navy machines in 1:35 scale, aircraft and helicopters. Specific kits are not listed by the manufacturer, so check the attachment type and the pylon dimensions on your own model.

Two pieces, that is a pair for both sides of the machine.

Plastic rocket pods mostly have the tubes blanked off and thick-walled. 3D printing allows genuinely open and deep tubes, and on a finished model that is one of the most visible details of all.
