This compact casting represents a masonry arch of quarry stone of the kind that spans brooks and ditches all over Europe. According to the manufacturer it measures approximately 9 x 10.5 x 6.5 centimeters and is made of plaster. The size is deliberately modest, so it fits even a smaller display base, where the bridge is meant to be a backdrop rather than the main scene.
Stone arches rested on a technology that had barely changed since the Middle Ages: a precisely dressed voussoir, a joint set in mortar and massive abutments in the banks. They lasted centuries, but their narrow roadway was fatal to them. Columns in Italy and in Normandy were held up at such bridges for hours, because wider vehicles did not fit on them and the detour led across a waterlogged field. Photographers therefore found ready-made scenes at these places: a leaning vehicle, a traffic patrol and infantry waiting.
Stone comes alive through variety of color, not through a single gray. Paint the individual blocks in slightly different shades and only then unify everything with a thin wash. Leave the lower parts at the waterline darker and add algae made of pigments to them, while the top of the wall will take lightening with a dry brush. Bring the rest of the terrain right up to the stone with putty, so that the flat bottom cut of the casting is not visible.
