The Opel Maultier is a German half-track vehicle of the Second World War that came about by converting an ordinary truck. A track unit replaced the rear axle, while the front wheels stayed. The conversion was meant to help the vehicles where a wheeled truck got stuck, that is on muddy and rutted roads.
These are replacement wheels for the Opel Maultier kit in 1:35 scale from Italeri. On a truck the viewer has the wheels right at eye level and their shape decides how the model stands. Add-on wheel sets are bought when the shape and the pattern of the wheels from the kit are not enough for the builder and the running gear deserves separate work. A wheel is also a part that can be replaced at any point during the build, because it is seated on a finished chassis.
First check what material the parts are made of. Ordinary cement for plastic has no effect on anything other than polystyrene, and only cyanoacrylate glue will hold the joint. Cut away surplus material with a sharp blade a short distance from the part, sand the remainder and clean out the hole for the axle with a drill, so that the wheel seats without play. Wash and degrease the parts before painting. While seating them, make sure all the wheels stand in one plane, otherwise the model will rock. Do not spray the tire in pure black; a gray-black tone looks truer in scale, and grade the layer of mud from the ground upward.
For modelers who are working on the running gear of the kit stated and want to give the wheels more attention than the parts from the kit allow. The set adds to a kit that you already have. Paints and glue are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
