About product

Stefanik Armored Train, Tank Wagon, 1:35, from HPH Models

HPH Models is a Czech manufacturer known for large-scale collector's kits cast from polyurethane resin in silicone molds. This technology captures even complex shapes with very fine detail, but it also means this is not an ordinary plastic kit. The model, in 1:35 scale, covers the subject of the improvised armored train Stefanik, specifically its tank wagon — the part of the train carrying a tank. The resin kit is intended for experienced modelers who have worked with resin before: the parts are glued with cyanoacrylate, not ordinary plastic cement.

The real subject

Improvised armored trains were built in the autumn of 1944 in the Zvolen railway workshops as a fast response to the needs of the insurgent units. The train named after Milan Rastislav Stefanik was built in a very short time. The train combined an armored locomotive, a gun and machine-gun wagon, a reconnaissance wagon, and so-called tank wagons — flatcars loaded with LT vz. 35 tanks, around which armor plating was built. The protection was improvised: available boiler plate was used, laid in two layers with fill between them. The trains supported the insurgents with fire and troop movement along the line; their surviving wagons are today significant technical monuments.

Building and painting tips

Wash the resin parts first with lukewarm soapy water to remove mold release residue — otherwise neither paint nor glue will hold. Cut casting blocks and pour stubs off with a saw or a cutting tool, never break them off. Sand wet and with airway protection, since resin dust is harmful to health. It is glued with cyanoacrylate (super glue); pin heavier parts with wire for extra strength. Always dry-fit before gluing. Start painting with a quality primer — without it, paint will not hold on resin. The improvised armor offers a rewarding surface — bring out the irregularly laid plates, welds and rivets with a dark wash, and emphasize rust, dust and traces of grease. Assemble and paint the wagon's running gear and wheels before closing up the superstructure. The model stands out on display on a section of track.

Who the model is for

  • For experienced modelers with resin-kit experience — this is not a model for beginners
  • For collectors of Czechoslovak military equipment and militaria
  • For anyone interested in armored trains and military railways
  • For builders of larger dioramas in 1:35 scale
  • For modelers looking for a subject that few other manufacturers offer

The model is supplied as a resin kit, unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

HPH Models makes its kits by casting polyurethane resin in silicone molds. Expect a resin kit, not ordinary injection-molded plastic — the parts are glued with cyanoacrylate, and a primer is needed before painting.

We do not recommend it. Resin kits require cutting casting blocks, wet sanding, dry-fitting and working with cyanoacrylate. This is a model for experienced modelers.

Cyanoacrylate (super glue), a primer suited to resin, and acrylic or enamel paints. Ordinary polystyrene cement does not work on resin.
