The diorama segment 1:35 Ruined building section is a plaster section of a shot-up facade that gives a scene an architectural background without laborious scratchbuilding from card.

Under this name the Italian brand Royal Model offers a section of masonry hit by fighting: part of a facade with a window opening, exposed bricks and plaster peeled away. The casting is plaster, so it is worked differently from resin: it can be cut with a saw, sanded, broken away further and made good with modeling plaster until the shape matches the other elements of the scene.
European urban building of the first half of the twentieth century rested on fired brick laid in lime mortar and covered with a layer of plaster. A hit from an artillery or tank shell did not punch through such a wall cleanly: the plaster fell away in slabs, the brick bonds crumbled around the hole and the lintels above the windows were left hanging. It is this type of damage that the segment reproduces, and that is why it suits scenes from the fighting for Monte Cassino, for Ortona and for the towns of central Europe in 1945.
First free the surface of dust and let it dry completely. For joining it to the neighboring elements and to the groundwork, reach for PVA (vinyl) glue, not for cyanoacrylate. Plaster absorbs strongly, so it will take up water-thinned paint unevenly; it pays to seal it with a thin acrylic primer. The bricks will then come out with a dry brush, a brown-gray wash will darken the gaps, and the layer of dust is fine-tuned with pigments.
It is supplied as an unpainted casting; paints and glue are not included.
