About product

Sherman VC Firefly 1:35 - a metal barrel for the QF 17pdr gun

A turned metal accessory from Master for building a model of the British Sherman VC Firefly in 1:35 scale. It is not a vehicle model but a replacement barrel for the main gun, which is fitted into the mantlet of a finished kit.

What a long barrel in plastic will not forgive

The 17pdr gun on the Firefly has an exceptionally long barrel, and it is precisely there that all the weaknesses of injection-molded plastic add up. The part is molded in halves, so a seam runs along its whole length; sanding it down also turns the cylindrical shape into an oval. Longer plastic barrels can also warp while still in the box, and heat bends them further. Turned metal is straight, stays straight even after years in a display case, and its muzzle is genuinely hollow. Because the barrel on this type protrudes far ahead of the outline of the hull, any warp or seam is visible from every angle.

The real subject

The Sherman VC Firefly was a British conversion of the American Sherman medium tank, with the Ordnance QF 17pdr anti-tank gun of 76.2 mm installed in its turret. The longer chamber called for a reworking of the gun mounting and for the radio to be moved into a box at the rear of the turret. The Firefly was one of the few Allied vehicles of its time able to hit heavily armored targets effectively at longer range.

Fitting and painting

Cut the plastic barrel off as close to the mantlet as possible and level the cut so that the metal seats squarely. Because of the length and the weight of the part it pays to glue it with epoxy, which gives you time to adjust the elevation, or with gel super glue with the barrel supported. Degrease the metal before painting and go over it with metal primer. When the barrel is painted together with the whole vehicle, it is a good idea to fit it only after the base color has been sprayed, so that it is not rubbed off during handling. For the finish, light dust at the base of the barrel and fine wear at the muzzle work well.

Who the accessory is for

  • For builders of Allied armored vehicles in 1:35 scale
  • For modelers troubled by a warped or seam-marked plastic barrel
  • For models where the barrel protrudes markedly beyond the outline of the vehicle
  • For combining with photo-etched parts and resin accessories

This is an accessory for building a model, not a stand-alone kit. The base model, glue and paints are not included in the package.

FAQ

The 17pdr gun has a very long barrel that reaches far beyond the outline of the hull. A seam or even the slightest warp in the plastic part is therefore visible from every angle.

Because of the weight, two-part epoxy works well, as it gives you time to adjust the elevation. An alternative is gel super glue with the barrel supported.

Best only after the base color of the vehicle has been sprayed. The metal part then will not be rubbed during masking and handling and will not pick up needless marks.
