Tow cable ends for a model of the Hercules recovery vehicle in 1:35 scale. An end is the eye and the coupling at the end of a cable, by which the cable is hung on the towing eyes of a vehicle. In kits the cable with its ends tends to be molded in one piece, so it holds the shape the mold gave it and cannot be bent. On a large model that stands out, precisely because the cable lies in plain view.
The 1:35 scale is large enough for the shape of the eye and the way the cable is secured to be visible on a finished model. With separate ends you can make the cable up from steel wire rope just as you imagine it: stowed in its brackets along the hull, coiled into a loop, or stretched between a towing and a towed vehicle in a diorama. And it is the sag given by the cable's own weight that gives a scene its believability.
Cut the excess material off with a sharp blade a little away from the part and sand the remainder down, so that the eye stays regular. Wash and degrease the parts before painting. Trim the end of the wire rope at an angle, so that it slides into the end fitting more easily, and glue it in with cyanoacrylate glue; before it sets, check that the cable runs naturally and does not twist anywhere. Paint the ends before you join them to the cable. The particular procedure follows the manufacturer's instructions.
For modelers who build military equipment in a large scale and want their tow cable to be flexible. Paints, glue and the wire rope are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
