The American field ration designated with the letter K was designed as a whole day's food in a single box that a soldier could carry himself and open anywhere. That sets it apart both from a kitchen and from large stocks of cans, and it is exactly why it turns up where a diorama captures movement: in a ditch, on a load bed, by a parked wagon, in the hand of a man who has just been given a moment of quiet. Empty wrappers were also left lying everywhere a unit halted, so they can suggest that a place had been occupied earlier.
Sixteen castings handle the shape of the boxes and the contents, a paper sheet supplies the thin wrappers, which in resin would come out unnaturally thick, and the decals bring the printing. It is the printing that matters with this subject, because without it a little box is just a block.
An opened box with the contents spilled out, a wrapper thrown away under a tree and a second tucked behind a strap tell the whole story of a break. A few pieces are enough, because a small object works more strongly when it has open space around it. A heap of wrappers, by contrast, scatters attention and flattens the scene.
