A set of resin wheels in 1:35 for the Italian VBM Freccia eight-wheeled infantry fighting vehicle. The castings carry a deep off-road tread pattern and a suggested sag of the tire under the weight of the vehicle.
Responsibility details are not available.
The VBM Freccia represents the Italian route to mobile mechanized infantry: an armored personnel carrier with drive to all eight wheels, built on a chassis related to the B1 Centauro wheeled tank destroyer. It came about in a consortium in which the armament capacities of Iveco and Oto Melara were joined, and it began reaching the line units of the Italian army toward the end of the first decade of this century. The vehicle carries an infantry squad under armor and bears an automatic cannon of twenty-five millimeters in a rotating turret. The wheeled platform proved itself on foreign missions: on roads it is faster, quieter and incomparably less demanding in maintenance than tracked vehicles.
On an eight-wheeled vehicle the running gear is what the eye finds first on a finished model. The production wheel of the Freccia has a deep off-road tread pattern, a tall sidewall and a disc with pressed detail, that is shapes whose faithful injection molding runs up against the limits of a split mold. The castings in this collection present them more crisply and also allow for the fact that the tire settles under the weight of the vehicle and flattens at the point of contact. The model then stands on the base not as if on little rollers, but really on wheels.
The parts are separated from the casting blocks with a fine saw, the mating surface is leveled with sandpaper and the surface is washed before painting, so that no mold release is left on it. It pays to paint the wheels separately and to fit them to the axles only at the end – the tread and the sidewall can then be shaded without the risk of the brush touching the finished armor.
